Should I calibrate my Mirrorless camera?

There is a common misconception that mirrorless cameras don’t need autofocus calibration because their AF sensors are built directly onto the imaging sensor. However, recent data suggests otherwise.

While mirrorless systems eliminate the mechanical misalignment issues found in DSLRs, they are still susceptible to other factors that can steal sharpness from your images:

  • Manufacturing Tolerances: Tiny physical discrepancies in the phase-detect masks or microlenses on the sensor can cause focus shifts.
  • Lens Variables: Internal lens calibration data, mechanical wear-and-tear, and optical aberrations can all impact how accurately a lens communicates with the camera body.
  • Significant Gains: Testing shows that roughly 50% of mirrorless users see immediately sharper results after calibration, and over 80% see some level of improvement in focus accuracy or tracking speed.

Even a small adjustment can be the difference between a “soft” shot and a tack-sharp one, especially when shooting wide-open or in low-light conditions.
