Are Canon Mirrorless cameras supported by FoCal?
The short answer is no, and this is due to a specific hardware and firmware change made by Canon during their transition to mirrorless.
The “Missing” Feature
Unlike their DSLR predecessors and Nikon’s Z-series, Canon has removed AF Microadjustment (AFMA) from the entire EOS R-series lineup. Because this internal setting no longer exists in the camera’s firmware, there is no way for any software – including FoCal—to apply the necessary offsets to calibrate the autofocus.
Why we no longer offer limited testing
In the early days of the R-system, we worked hard to provide a subset of tools for Canon users, including:
- Aperture Sharpness and Focus Consistency testing.
- Stabilization and MultiTest analysis.
However, Canon has made their mirrorless ecosystem increasingly restrictive for third-party developers. Maintaining even these basic tests has become a disproportionate amount of work for very limited real-world benefit to the user.
Our Position
We believe in providing tools that make a tangible difference in your photography. Since Canon has blocked the ability for users to fine-tune their focus at a system level, we have shifted our development focus toward platforms that still empower photographers to calibrate and optimize their gear.
