I have a pretty large shoot coming up in a few weeks, I’d love to use my 5Ds for the shoot but am not confident with its focus from my initial results compared to my 5Dm3. Can you provide any firm estimates at all on when compatibilty for the 5Ds will be put in place? Even in the test release, I’d be willing to use it!
Hi Ken,
I can’t give an exact date but I can tell you what’s on the plan. At the moment pretty well all development and testing resource is on the Mac V2 Release (TR3). After that attention will turn to the 5ds, it’s always going to be somewhat “it depends what we find” deal but best guess is around mid August all going well.
Best Regards,
Dave
Thanks for the info – my big shoot is on 8/10-8/11, so here’s to hoping there’s something available before then 😉
Hi Ken,
Your big shoot must be underway, however I used FoCal-1.9.11.416 to calibrate 7 lenses for my 5DSR and got decent results.
The only thing I noticed when adding the files is that the software did not read the AMFA values so I had to enter them manually, which got me pretty close. Then I did some additional shots to fine tune the results. Maybe not the most elegant and efficient approach but worked for me for the time being.
I tried to do the same with FoCal-2.0.3.2215 and I could not enter the AFMA values manually, it seems that field is locked in this new version.
Once the release that supports this bodies is out I will run the tests again for verification.

Hi Rodrigo,
Good point about being able to use pre-captured image files fed into FoCal. This whole area changed in FoCal 2.0 with the idea to make it more robust and easier to use. With 2.0 5DS/5DSR EXIF should be automatically read from pre-captured files (with no need to manually enter the AFMA value).
Full FoCal support for 5DS/5DSR is very soon now (could even be tomorrow all being well!) 🙂
Best Regards,
Dave
Would you know if it will be released before the end of this month?
Hi Robert,
FoCal now has support for the Canon 5DS / 5DS R 🙂
You can read more details at https://blog.reikanfocal.com/2015/08/focal-2-tr4-now-available-with-5dsr-support-windowsmac-stdpluspro/
Note while it is called a ‘test release’ it is in fact very usable and now feature complete. To the extent we highly recommend new users of FoCal to skip totally FoCal 1.x releases and go straight to using FoCal 2.
Best Regards,
Dave
soooo, is it available for the 5DsR yet?
Hi Abe,
Yep, 5DsR support was provided back in 2015 so it is supported from FoCal 2.0 (we’re currently working on FoCal 2.5 at the moment!).
You can also check out Supported Cameras List 🙂
Best Regards,
Dave
Thanks Dave!
Update to include Nikon D850?
Hi Steve,
Thank you for your interest in FoCal. We’ve just added a new blog entry FoCal 2.6 – Adds Auto Focus Calibration Support for Nikon D850 🙂
Best Regards,
Dave
I just purchased a canon 1dx markIII and this version of focal (2.11.2.6860) that I purchased in February 2020 does not recognize it for calibration. When will this be updated so I can use focal.
Hi Michael,
We’re definitely going to add 1DX Mark III support, we have been held up waiting to get hold of one to develop with but we now have ours coming later this week 🙂
Best Regards,
Dave
