Fixes and Improvements

The following is a list of the changes since the release of FoCal 1.9.7:

New features:

  • NEW: Support for the Nikon D810

Software Support Status

Mac

The following table shows the support for FoCal for Mac:

Operating System Camera Manufacturer Status
OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Canon & Nikon Fully functional
OS X 10.7 (Lion) Canon & Nikon Fully functional
OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) Canon & Nikon Fully functional
OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) Canon & Nikon Fully functional

The following table shows the support for FoCal for Windows:

Windows 7 Canon & Nikon Fully functional
Windows 8 Canon & Nikon Fully functional
Windows 8.1 Canon & Nikon Fully functional

We no longer officially support Windows XP as this operating system is no longer supported by Microsoft.  However, we haven’t stopped the software working on Windows XP, so you should find that it still works OK if you are using this operating system, but we cannot fix any issues that might arise only on Windows XP.

Additional Information

The following is additional information specific to this release:

Known Issues

We’re not aware of any known issues with this release.

Other Information

  • The Testing Guide is somewhat out of date and we are planning a rewrite shortly.  The general concepts are still very valid, but the operational information towards the end of the guide relates to older versions of FoCal.
  • The File Camera functionality in FoCal is no longer being maintained.  We don’t believe there are many users of this feature and we will be re-implementing the ability to run tests on files in a much more user friendly way shortly.

How do I get it?

If you already have a license for FoCal, you can download the software at no extra cost from the License Management System – you’ll see the link to the download once you log in.

If you don’t own FoCal, you can purchase FoCal Standard, FoCal Plus or FoCal Pro from the store.

MAC: The software is available as a disk image (DMG) file for OS X, containing the software itself, the target images and documentation in separate directories.

WINDOWS: The software is available as a ZIP file, which contains the software, the target images and the documentation in separate directories.

Installing on OS X (IMPORTANT!):

FoCal for Mac uses the Mono framework and this must be installed before using FoCal.  Please see this post for complete information on how to ensure your Mac is set up correctly to run FoCal.  If you do not follow these instructions, FoCal will NOT operate correctly!

QuickStart Guides

There are short guides available which help you through the installation, connection and first use of the software available for Windows and for Mac on the Document Downloads page.

    • Argh! Well spotted Rudi! The delay in spotting the D810 may be the result of having a memory card in the camera with a lot of images on – can you make sure you don’t have a card in the camera when running FoCal as it can slow things down with Nikon cameras if there are a lot of files on the card.

      • Thanks for the hint. Yes, better 😉 Forgot about it as it was just a quick shot to check for D810. Hope to get some time on Sunday to check the D810.

  • I am also experiencing continual crashes. Mac OS-X 10.9.4, FoCal 1.9.8, Nikon D810 connected via USB 2 cable due to known USB 3 issues with FoCal. The calibration typically proceeds normally. About every third calibration procedure, on or around the 20th to 30th calibration test image, the program just exits. It is always in the final fine tuning portion after the program has stepped through the values from -20 to +20 in 10 step or 6 step increments (depending on the setting in preferences). This is similar to what occurred on the last version with other Nikon bodies. Redoing the same calibration often ends in success but, as stated, the program crash occurs approximately every third calibration.

  • Hello,

It is great to use Focal on Mac with D810. This version seem much faster than before (comparing with the RGB run on window).

However there are 2 crashes today when I calibrate 5 different lens.
    1) during saving the report, it crash and can only save 2 pages of PDF
    2) during running the test, it crash and shut down

I presume these are due to some bugs. I would have to say that I really appreciate the earliest release for D810. I can accept minor bugs in this first version rather than to wait for a very long time.

Look forward to the next version.

    Thanks guys. Good job !

  • Adjusted my D810 with three lenses today; 70-200mm f4; 24-70mm Tamron, 50mm f1.8 Nikkor G. Everything worked perfectly. (I did not save reports.) Thanks for making the D810 version available a quickly as you could.

  • Thank you for FoCal for D810. Calibrated Nikon 85 f1.8 + 28 f1.8 with one crash during AF cal and second during live-view while focusing target with your app.
Only one note you should fix.
Base ISO for D810 is 64.
I selected it manually but was warned every time I run any calibration 🙂

    Anyhow good job guys!

    • Hi Dominic. Only beta versions of FoCal are set to expire, so it sounds like you’re using a very old version. You need to log in to the LMS at lms.fo-cal.co.uk (use the password reset option if you can’t remember your password) and you’ll be able to download the latest version.

    • Hi Alexander,

Thanks you for your recent purchase of FoCal.

The settings which can be controlled via the USB link (and FoCal) are dictated by the camera manufacturer, we try to be really clear on the supported cameras page what level of automation is possible (cameras are either “hands free” or “user assisted”). With more detailed explanation on that page.

Please do contact support (blog comments are not always checked as often) if we can help in any way.

      Best Regards,
      Dave
